An ethno-festival titled “QYMYZ FEST – Kymyzmuryndyk 2026” was held at the Arbat Square in Astana, jointly organized by the Council of Veterans of the Saryarka District and the “Active Longevity Center” of the Saryarka District. The large-scale event aimed at promoting national values brought together residents and guests of the capital, becoming an educational celebration that highlights the rich cultural heritage of the Kazakh people.
Kymyzmuryndyk is one of the ancient Kazakh traditions. In spring, when mares begin to be milked and the first kumys is prepared, villagers gather together to taste the drink and exchange good wishes. This tradition is considered a symbol of abundance, prosperity, harmony, and unity. Today, such events aimed at reviving national heritage play an important role in helping the younger generation understand the significance of ancestral traditions.

Guests of the festival were welcomed by staff dressed in national costumes, creating a special Kazakh festive atmosphere. Visitors explored a handicraft exhibition prepared by elderly participants of the Active Longevity Center and learned about the art of spinning wool using a spindle. The experience and craftsmanship of the older generation left a strong impression on the audience.
The highlight of the event was the theatrical performance of the “Kymyzmuryndyk” ritual staged by the “Tumar” ethno-folklore group. The creative team, led by Sanat Mamessova, vividly conveyed the meaning and essence of this ancestral tradition. Scenes of kumys preparation, the blessing of elders, and the ritual of shashu created a powerful sense of national spirit.

As part of the festival, guests were offered kumys and traditional national dishes. Traditional games such as asyk atu, langy tebu, whip braiding, and bone breaking competitions were also held, allowing participants to test their skills. These competitions not only promote traditional games but also increase young people’s interest in national culture.
The festive concert program was also warmly received by the audience. Ethno-folklore ensembles, vocalists, and dance groups performed on stage, presenting beautiful examples of Kazakh music and dance. The harmony of national art and culture enriched the event and created a joyful atmosphere for visitors.
Chairman of the City Council of Veterans, Sansyzbai Yesilov, attended the Kymyzmuryndyk celebration and delivered a congratulatory speech, emphasizing the importance of this traditional holiday.
“Kymyzmuryndyk is a celebration of prosperity and unity. It is not only a festival honoring a national drink, but also a deeply meaningful event that strengthens generational continuity and promotes respect for ancestral traditions. The main goal of today’s gathering is to honor our national values, bring together representatives of the older generation, and provide spiritual inspiration. The Active Longevity Center always pays special attention to ensuring an active, meaningful, and healthy lifestyle for our veterans, as well as promoting national culture,” said Serik Karabatyrov, Director of the Active Longevity Center.
The “QYMYZ FEST – Kymyzmuryndyk 2026” ethno-festival became a meaningful event that promoted national values, strengthened generational continuity, and fostered unity and harmony. Such initiatives are an important step in preserving the rich cultural heritage of the nation and passing it on to future generations.
